What is a 5 minute Memory?

…and is it really possible for a busy parent?

By Tim Richardson

What is a five minute memory and is it really possible for any parent to create a beautiful family film without having been to film school!?

Do you worry that making films is just for the professionals?

Do you expect it to take Hours and Hours making a film?

Did you think you’d have to spend the entire day filming and not be present with your family?

…Well it doesn’t have to be that way!

When I first started creating family films – I’d head out and try and film the entire day and guess what…

It felt like I was just a passive observer as my wife went on adventures with the kid!

I couldn’t be present because I was always hidden behind my camera…

After a while – I realised that my motivation for making these long form films covering an entire day was not so much for the memory – it was more of a pride thing. I wanted to create a film that was epic!

After a while I realised that the films that I really treasured though – were not the big days out…

It was the relatively mundane moments…

By choosing a moment that really mattered…

…Spending a few minutes really capturing that moment…

…Then putting my phone down and being present…

…meant I was able to enjoy the moments far more whilst also creating a bank of memories my family can look back on and treasure.

90% of the films I make of my family are what at Memory Makers Academy we call The 5 Minute Memory

Filmed in under 5 minutes…and…

Edited in around 5 minutes too!

It takes the pressure of you as a parent

It allows you to be present

and you can make the Mundane Memorable in Minutes.

How do you do it?

Well the trick is to be economical with your filming.

  • Film short clips.
  • Film from different angles
  • Keep it to no more than 20 shots.

The next, and most important thing…

Always edit your films together on the day you make them

The filming and editing is part of the process of cementing a memory in your mind. The sooner you do it the easier it is to do it quickly because it’s fresh in your head, and the quicker you can rewatch it which is the final part of building up your long term memory bank.

Re-living a moment creates a new memory!…

…and in years to come you’ll find yourself not knowing if it’s the actual event you’re remembering or your watching of the event that you remember. The two merge to create a NEW memory.

Why you should edit your films quickly

Just editing a film doesn’t mean that you’ve created a long term memory.

Undoubtedly an edited film will be waaaay better to watch than an unedited film.

But if you’re just filming clips and then coming back to edit them 6 months later you’re missing out on a key part of the memory making process…
